004 - Reasoning In State Hospital

9 : Outstanding

Imagine this - You're trapped in the dark corners of an industrial complex, slurred voices of unknown origin surrounding nearby.
You lie in a steel cage devoid of defining features, for reasons unknown, by peopleー no, beings, of some kind. Impossible sounds ensue, but nothing reaches your cage... save for unending trepidation, creeping without release.

Such feelings occur to me as I sink into this strange beast of a track. Its 1hr runtime is packed to the brim with surprising detail and distortions. Faint melodies, erratic sounds, delay and reversing, blips and rings, fluctuations of the unending loop...

Talk about a masterclass in minimalism. I've always treasured repetition done right, and every element here stays true to the atmosphere. All lending to an addictive experience, subtly crawling into my mind time after time. I haven't felt so encouraged to fixate on the finest of details since A Red Score in Tile.

Eventually near the end, a horrendous cry consumes the track. A chilling climax blaring above all, rending a voice of untold agony.
Then on it marches toward emptiness, the base loop growing ever-distorted before leaving for good. That squelching noise, akin to footsteps, offers no comfort like the final sounds you'll ever hear.
